Sharp-lobed hepatica brings color to the garden early in spring as blue to pinkish purple blossoms rise from the ground, each atop its own fuzzy stem. These flowers open more fully on sunny days but retain their charm even when partially closed beneath cloud cover. Hepatica’s large, three-lobed leaves appear on individual stems only after the blossoms have opened, bright green in the beginning of the season before darkening and taking on purple mottling as the year progresses. The leaves are considered evergreen, often remaining on the plant through late winter. A lovely addition to all but the driest shade gardens.
