Lobelia cardinalis-Cardinal Flower

Cardinal Flower is a striking native plant that boasts tall spikes of brilliant scarlet blooms for several weeks in late summer. Each flower has two thin petals on top and three lower petals that join at the base to form a tube-like structure, attracting long-tongued pollinators like butterflies, moths and hummingbirds. A showy and eye-catching plant, Cardinal Flower adds vertical interest to rain gardens and wet woodland plantings with its saturated red color, rare among Illinois natives. Individual plants only live a few years but will readily self-seed to form a long-lasting colony. Impervious to rabbit and deer grazing.
