Asclepias tuberosa-Butterfly Weed

Butterfly Weed is one of only a few orange-flowered Illinois natives and is an essential addition to any sunny, well-drained pollinator garden. Its bright orange flowers grow in showy clusters at the top of erect, 2ft tall stems with narrow, spiraling leaves. It is a cornerstone species for numerous butterflies, most notably the monarch, providing food and habitat at every point in their lifecycle. It does not have the milky sap of other members of the milkweed family but remains both deer and rabbit-resistant.
