Polemonium reptans-Jacob's Ladder

Jacob's Ladder brings green to the garden quite early in spring with the emergence of delicate compound leaves. Their ovoid leaflets are arranged such that they were thought to resemble a ladder, hence the common name. Clusters of sky blue, bell-shaped flowers dangle above the leaves for three to four weeks in April and May, attracting numerous pollinators. Compact mounds of lush, fern-like foliage provide unique texture and interest well after the blooms have faded. This adaptable plant can thrive in almost any soil and sun conditions but does best in shady areas. Foliage turns a striking red color in the fall.
