Side-oats grama is a hardy, clump-forming grass with tiny but impactful purple and orange flowers that dangle uniquely from the underside of tall stalks in mid to late summer. The flowers mature into delicate oat-like seed heads that attract songbirds late in the season. Its seed stalks sway gracefully in the wind, rising up above dense, blue-green foliage that takes on a stunning orange color in the fall. Side-oats grama is drought-tolerant and thrives in sunny, well-drained locations. It plays larval host to several species of skippers and moths.
