Anise Hyssop is a long-blooming pollinator magnet with dense 3-6in spikes of tubular purple flowers that rise above bushy, upright foliage. The “anise” of its name comes from the strong scent of licorice its leaves give off when crushed, and every part of the plant is edible. Its leaves and flowers can be steeped to make a soothing tea, sprinkled on salads, or baked in desserts. This drought-resistant member of the mint family thrives in dry to mesic soil with full or partial sun and will readily self-seed when happy. It is deer-resistant, and its seeds provide food for birds during the winter.
